Cupping at the 2024 Olympics

Clever reason Paris 2024 Olympic athletes have dark circles on their backs

The Olympics in Paris 2024 are well underway and sports fans noticed some athletes have strange, dark red spots on their backs – and it turns out there’s a clever reason

The swimming is underway at Paris Olympics 2024, with Adam Peaty picking up a silver medal in 100m breaststroke, coming in only 0.02 seconds behind Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi at the weekend.

Paris 2024 is set for plenty more world class swimming, and while people from across the globe will be eagerly watching to see who takes home the medals – many have also been distracted by another phenomenon.

On Sunday (July 28) Italy’s Martinenghi snatched the victory bearing dark red circles on his back. And back in Rio in 2026, swimmers and gymnasts, particularly Team USA, including Michael Phelps, could be seen with the mysterious dots – which look like bruises. The strange marks haven’t gone unnoticed by Olympics fans in 2024 either. One person took to Reddit to ask: “Why are so many Olympians covered in large red circles?”

One person took to X to clear the matter up: “Have you ever seen swimmers and other athletes at the Olympics with those big round marks on their body? Well that’s dry cupping and I promise it doesn’t hurt,” while another added: “When you’re watching the Olympics and thinking ‘What an odd birthmark…’ oh right it’s the Olympics, they’re cupping.”

So what is it, exactly? Cupping is an ancient therapy where heated cups are places on the skin. It’s a form of acupuncture, where flammable liquid is lit in a glass cup.

The first records of cupping date back to more than 3,500 years ago, when it is thought to have been used by Egyptians. When the oxygen is burnt away, it creates a vacuum which sticks the cup to the body, and sucks the skin up – drawing blood to the surface. After the treatment, the red spots, created by the suction, usually last for three to four days. These are created due to the ruptured capillaries beneath the skin.

Cupping is thought to reduce soreness and speed the healing of overworked muscles – which explains why it’s often used by Olympians. US gymnast Alexander Naddour told USA Today back in 2016 that cupping was “the secret” to his health. He added: “It’s been better than any money I’ve spent on anything else.”
